Small Engine Repair

Small engine mechanics repair fractional-horsepower gasoline engines for lawnmowers, garden tractors and similar machines. In this program, students learn to identify problems, dismantle engines and repair or replace parts. Applicants for this course must have completed ninth grade. During this three year program, students will learn the theory behind the operation of two and four cycle engines. They will have the choice of several different areas to specialize in, such as chain saw repair, comprehensive small engine repair, motorcycle repair, comprehensive small engine repair, lawn and garden equipment repair and snowmobile repair.

SMALL GASOLINE ENGINE 2 & 4 STROKE CYCLE - 1 cr
Introduces the operation, construction, and design of various small gas engines.  Audio and visual aids as well as interactive theory are used to explain how both 2 & 4 stroke engines function.

SMALL GASOLINE ENGINE OPERATING SYSTEM - 1 cr
Introduces students to the various systems used by small gas engines for operation.  Electrical, lubrication, governing, and carbueration to name a few.

SMALL GASOLINE ENGINE CONSTRUCTION & WEAR SPECS - 1 cr
Summarizes how to inspect each part during a major or minor rebuild of a small gas engine, how to find component damage, and how to measure wear accurately as well as use of manufacturer repair manuals.

CHAIN SAW REPAIR - 1cr
Introduces drives, cutting chains, oiling systems, and sharpening on various chainsaws and enhances 2 cycle hand held power equipment repair.

GAS WELDING - 1cr
An introduction to oxy-acetylene gas cutting and welding units.  Explains equipment care and maintenance, set-up of equipment, and metal preparation.

ARC WELDING - 1 cr
Explains alternating current and direct current arc welding machines.  Shows how an electrical current melts electrodes to supply filler metal.  Electrode sizing and its importance are explained.

OUTBOARD MOTORS - GENERAL SERVICE - 1 cr
An introduction to general maintenance of operational systems of outboard motors.  Fuel, electrical, lubrication, and cooling are just a few.

OUTBOARD MOTORS - DRIVE SYSTEMS - 1 cr
Explains the operation, maintenance, and repair through diagnosis of propulsion devices used with or on outboard motors.

OUTBOARD MOTORS - GEARBOX ASSEMBLY - 1cr
Explains the operation and service repair of outboard motor internal gearboxes, inspection of gears, shafts and keys, and reassembly.

LAWN & GARDEN TRACTOR DRIVES - 1 cr
An introduction to the various drive systems of lawn and garden tractors.  Course covers 3, 4, 5, and 6 speed transaxles, vari-drive systems, hydrostatic drives, and pulleys, belts, and idlers.
