Masonry

Masons build durable surfaces and structures with block, brick, stone and concrete. This course emphasizes hands-on experience building masonry structures in the shop area. Applicants for this course must have completed ninth grade. During this three year program, students will be introduced to a variety of masonry methods and materials to prepare them to enter any aspect of the trade. They will also learn how to estimate the material required for various jobs.

MASONRY ORIENTATION & SAFETY - 1cr
Includes all masonry materials and the terminology needed to work in the masonry trade. Safety is stressed, emphasizing every skill from stacking brick to mixing mortar in a mechanical mixer.

BASIC BRICK MASONRY - 1cr
Beginner masons spread mortar, apply mortar to the ends of brick and lay brick. Projects include brick corners, brick walls and brick piers. Students are challenged to build each structure level plumb and straight. Students design and build a personal project before completing this course.

BASIC BLOCK MASONRY - 1cr
Students will build concrete masonry units. Demonstration projects will include corners and walls. Included is trade terminology associated with block masonry.

BONDING BLOCK MASONRY - 1cr
Understanding size and shape of concrete masonry units. Demonstrate how to pattern bond block so corners will have the proper cuts to build corners as specified by the plans. The safe use of power tools and hand tools for cutting block is emphasized.

BONDING BRICK MASONRY - 1cr
Use of six different brick positions to construct patterns and designs for brick walls. Includes proper mortar mixes for bonding brick with other construction material. Demonstrate construction of brick corners and walls using the different patterns and brick positions.

CONCRETE - 1cr
Work with concrete in the preparing, placing, finishing and curing stages of a job. Demonstrations include porches, sidewalks, footing, patios and driveways. Includes forms necessary to support concrete during an actual concrete pour. Tools for the finishing process of concrete surfaces will be discussed and used in projects.

ADVANCED BLOCK MASONRY - 1cr
Includes terms, definitions and methods of construction practices related to advanced block masonry. Topics include mortar mixes, their strengths and uses, reinforcement of masonry walls, cleaning masonry walls, and estimating masonry supplies and materials.

ADVANCED BRICK MASONRY - 1cr
The focus of this course is to provide students with a knowledge of advanced brick masonry. Students will be expected to know terms and definitions related to types of advanced work being covered. Some topics to be covered include decorative walls, chimney construction, working from scaffolding and mortar mixes.

ELECTIVES

FIREPLACE CONSTRUCTION - 1cr
Terms and definitions important to safe fireplace construction. Design and build a masonry fireplace from footer to cap. Topics include unit type fireplace construction and estimating the materials for fireplace construction

CERAMIC TILE - .5cr
Residential thin set methods for tile installation including terms and definitions. Topics include laying wall tile, floor tile, and exterior applications for tile installation.

CARPENTRY APPLICATION - .5cr
An introduction to carpentry methods and construction practices related to hand tool safety, power tool use and proper use of fastening tools in the construction of various projects.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS - .5cr
Includes the hardware components of a computer, graphic illustrator for drawing masonry projects, and spread sheet use for estimating and record keeping.

ELDORADO STONE - .5cr
Work with different types of Eldorado stone. Apply stone to a wood frame structure and masonry walls. Topics include procedures for finishing joints between the stone.

WORK-BASED LEARNING: SHADOWING -.5cr
A method of training where the students work with a contractor for three (3) weeks without pay. The student learner works closely with the contractor on tasks or competencies that were previously studied at school.
