Marketing / Distributive Education

This course introduces students to marketing, retailing and merchandising. Other topics include selling, advertising, management, visual merchandising, human relations, safety, applied economics, communications and business math. Class is held in a classroom in the Lifelong Learning Center at the Schuylkill Mall. Students are given the opportunity to actually work at various jobs in different kinds of retail stores.

SALESMANSHIP - 1cr
Personal and economic aspects of selling through the actual selling process. Product analysis, buying sales ethics and consumer buying habits.

RETAILING - 1cr
Merchandising, store operations, control and credit, sales promotion, employee relations and retail operations with balance between the sales, buying and planning.

VISUAL MERCHANDISING - .5cr
An awareness of the various theories, styles and designs applied in display is developed and taught in this course. Students use basic visual merchandising techniques to devise their own displays and those in various retail settings.

MARKETING INTERNSHIP I - .5cr
Students intern with a variety of employers to learn a specialized marketing area. Workplace activities may include special projects, a sample of tasks from different jobs or tasks from a single occupation. This does not include financial compensation.

WORK-BASED INTERNSHIP I  - 1cr
(Elective)
Select students fulfill the Internship requirement by focusing on the PLATO System.  Designated modules are assigned by the instructor.

APPLIED ECONOMICS - 1cr
The basic concepts of economics identified by the National Council on Economic Education. Theoretical learning is enhanced by the experience of organizing and operating a business by a computerized simulation and monthly visits from a business consultant.

PERSONAL COMPUTER BASICS - .5cr
The foundation necessary for completing Marketing concepts and projects. Some elements include Windows, Letter styles and Print Shop.

ADVERTISING - 1cr
An introduction to the fundamentals of advertising: promotions, effective messages and advertising formats. Students design and create advertisements.

MARKETING INTERNSHIP II - .5cr
Students intern with an employer to learn a specialized Marketing area. Workplace activities may include special projects and a variety of tasks from different jobs in this establishment.

WORK-BASED INTERNSHIP II - .5cr
(Elective)
Select students fulfill the Internship requirement by focusing on the PLATO System.  Designated modules are assigned by the instructor. 

CO-OP I - .5cr
(Elective)
Instruction paralled by academic and vocational studies is available to students with permission of the instructor. A related job in the marketing and retail field is usually compensated financially.

YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP I - .5cr
(Elective)
A multi-year program beginning in the junior year and combining school and work based learning in a retail and marketing area. Designed to lead into a related post-secondary program or an entry level job or both. It may or may not include financial compensation.

MARKETING RESEARCH - 1cr
Revolves around marketing surveys which are designed, utilized and evaluated by the students and a business mentor. Basic techniques in marketing research are taught as an important part of the learning-by-doing concept.

PERSONAL COMPUTER APPLICATIONS - .5cr
Students will develop budgets, checking programs, business cards, letterheads and advertising projects. Microsoft Word is used along with Printshop Deluxe..

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - 1cr
An analysis of the personnel functions in business and industry are studied. Topics to be covered include selection, placement, training and the function of managerial responsibilities in a business setting.

MARKETING INTERNSHIP III - .5cr
Students intern with an employer to learn about a specialized Marketing Area. This may be excluded if Co-Op II or Apprenticeship II is taken.

WORK-BASED INTERNSHIP III - .5cr to 3 cr.

Select students fulfill the internship requirement by focusing on the PLATO System.  Designated modules are assigned by the instructor.

CO-OP II - .5cr - 3cr
(Elective)
Instruction is paralleled by academic and vocational studies in this two semester program. A related job in the marketing and retail field is usually compensated financially by a co-op station.

YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP II - .5cr
(Elective)
This course combines school and work based learning in a retail and marketing setting. It is designed to lead into a related post-secondary program or an entry-level job or both. Both full-time and part-time employment are feasible.
