Machine Trades Technology

Machine tool operators use various machining tools to shape metal to precise dimensions. They usually are identified by the type of tool they operate, such as lathe operator or drill press operator. General machinists are skilled in a variety of operations, and often switch from making one product to another. Applicants for this course must have completed ninth grade. During this three year program, students receive specialized classroom, shop and on-the-job experience. They learn to apply knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties and machining procedures to turn a block of metal into an intricate part that meets precise specifications.

Level I
FUNDAMENTALS OF MACHINING SKILLS - 1 cr

Shop safety, use of all hand tools, use of vertical and horizontal saws, drill presses, and bench grinders.

MACHINING SKILLS I - cr
Shop safety, identify and use all precision tools associated with the Machine Trades, interpret blueprints, and related symbols.

INTRO TO LATHE OPERATIONS - 1 cr
Lathe safety, basic lathe operations such as calculating speeds and feeds, turning, facing, threading, knurling, tool grinding and using collect system and three jaw chuck.

Level II
MACHINING SKILLS II - 1 cr

Safety review, identify ferrous and nonferrous metals, describe S.A.F. Materials numbering system, identify types of heat treating and use precision gaging equipment.

LATHE OPERATIONS II - 1 cr
Complex lathe operations such as parting, internal threading, reaming, tapping and taper turning methods and use of a four jaw chuck.

INTRO TO MILLING MACHINES - 1 cr
Safety, set-up and operation on both a vertical and horizontal milling machine.

Level III
MACHINING SKILLS III - 1 cr

Use and identify carbide inserts for milling and lathe operations, calculate chip loads for milling cutters and hazardous material handling and disposal.

MILLING MACHINES II - 1 cr
Safety review on vertical and horizontal milling machines, use sine bar to machine precision angles, use rotary tables and dividing heads.  Use of digital readouts.  Use of 90 degree milling head.

GRINDING TECHNOLOGY - .5 cr
Safety on surface grinders, pressing wheels, selecting proper wheels, grinding to shoulder and use wheel dressers.
