Health Careers

Graduates of the Health Careers course are prepared to give personal care to sick or injured people, to provide home management assistance and to perform skills required in a medical or dental office. Students are prepared for a wide variety of health occupations. Applicants for this course must have completed ninth grade. During this three year program, students combine hands-on experience in a nursing home with classroom instruction.  Health Care Fundamentals II is the State approved Nurse Aide Training Program**.  Upon successful completion of Health Care Fundamentals II, the student will be eligible to sit for the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Program.  (State Nurse Aide "Certification" Exam).

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY - 1cr
Intricate study of the human body and diseases from childhood to geriatrics. The foundation for course work in the health related professions.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY - 1cr
Provides students with a foundation into the language of health care.  Includes common medical prefixes, suffixes and roots, and uses a systems approach to master medical terms.

HEALTH CARE FUNDAMENTALS I - 1cr
Foundation course.  Introduces students to the health care setting, available career options, and basic nursing care.

NUTRITION - 1cr
Fundamentals of nutrition, maintenance of health through good nutrition, diet therapy in disease.

KEYBOARDING & FORMATTING FOR HEALTH CARE - 1cr
Students learn basic keyboarding and formatting techniques for use in the dental and/or medical office.  Also includes basic introductory office skills.

INTRODUCTION TO ADVANCED TOPICS IN HEALTH CARE - 1.5 cr
Students will explore advanced concepts like nursing process, medical ethics, and a topic of their choice while honing their research and critical thinking skills.

MEDICAL CAREER SPECIALTIES II - 1.5cr
Divided into two main sections in order to provide the student with an introduction to basic skills for diversified health fields.

Information Management Core:
Exploration of medical billing.

Therapeutic Core:
Introduction to the Physical & Respiratory Therapies and Dental Assisting Occupations.

Diagnostic Core:
Introduction to Laboratory Technology,
Electrocardiography & Pharmaceutical Technology.

ELECTIVES: (Level II students must take one) HEALTH CARE FUNDAMENTAL II - 1cr
For this course, students must meet prerequisites to enter.  Entails State approved OBRA Nurse Aide Training Program.  Students provide personal care, basic nursing skills, and restorative care in a long-term care facility while safeguarding resident rights, promoting independence, and meeting mental health and social service needs of the residents.

MEDICAL CAREER SPECIALTIES I - 1cr  
Divided into two main sections in order to provide the student with an introduction to basic skills for diversified health fields:

Environmental Core:
Introduction to Infection Control Aide, Dietary Aide, and Housekeeping Aide.

Information Management Core:
Introduction to Medical Secretary, Computerized Medical Office Concepts, Ward Clerk, Insurance Clerk, Admissions Clerk, and Physician's Assistant.

** Prerequisites for entrance into the Nurse Aide Training Program

- Good physical health as evidenced by physical exam from a licensed physician.

- Absence of communicable disease.

- Tetanus booster within 5 years.

- Negative tuberculin test.

- Criminal History Record Information Clearance.

- Final acceptance into the Nurse Aide Training Program is contingent upon completion of the health screening indicate that the applicant is not physically able to participate in the program, or if the results of the CHRI indicate a criminal history, the applicant will not be permitted to enter the program.

- Completion of level I coursework with an 80% average of better.
