Cosmetology

Cosmetology is one of a cluster of health-related occupations. It is a personal service involving care of skin, hair, scalp and nails. Cosmetology is a three year program consisting of 1250 hours. Applicants must have completed ninth grade. The future of the beauty industry is boundless and full of personal challenge. New products, processes and techniques appear everyday. Cosmetology offers many career opportunities from owning your own business, managing a chain of salons or specializing in other exciting areas of cosmetology such as manicurist/nail technician, trichologist, electrologists, etc.

FUNDAMENTALS OF HAIRSTYLING I - .5 cr
This course introduces the student to the salon environment.  It covers the safety and sanitation procedures of beauty services.

FUNDAMENTALS OF HAIRSTYLING II - 1 cr
This section of the course will teach the basic design principles for current hairstyling.

SCALP AND HAIR CARE - .5 cr
Students will acquire a thorough understanding of both the theory and practice of all pertinent subjects dealing with the structure of the hair and the use of styling products.

HAIR CUTTING TECHNIQUES I - .5 cr
This course introduces students to the basic principles of haircutting.

THERMAL STYLING - .5 cr
Students will learn innovative styling techniques for thermal waving and curling.

SKIN CARE - .5 cr
Students will acquire a thorough understanding of both the theory and practice of all pertinent subjects dealing with skin care and the application of cosmetics.

PERMANENT WAVING - 1 cr
This course helps the student understand the essential fundamentals of perming.  It covers hair structure and the chemistry of perming.  Creative perming techniques are used.

NAIL CARE - 1 cr
Students will acquire the knowledge and proper procedures for promoting healthy nails and cuticles.

HAIR CUTTING TECHNIQUES II - .5 cr
This section of the course will help students advance from the basic principles of hair cutting to the intricacies of today's latest styles.

HAIR COLORING I - .5 cr
This course introduces the student to hair coloring from analyzing of hair, formulating and applying color, to evaluating results.

HAIR COLORING II - .5 cr
This section of the course is designed to teach the student a variety of special effect color techniques.

CHEMICAL HAIR RELAXING - 1 cr
This course is designed to give students knowledge in chemical restructuring methods.

ADVANCED NAIL CARE - .5 cr
This course will introduce the student to the latest techniques in nail artistry and nail applications, artificial nails and wrap formats along with nail art will be covered.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE - .5 cr
Students will learn the Pennsylvania Cosmetology laws, rules and regulations, and prepare for the State Board examination.

*1250 hrs. required by PA State Board of Cosmetology for license.
