Occupational Child Care

The Occupational Child Care Program prepares students for careers that will encompass working with children. The course is a three year program which emphasizes hands-on experience through clinical work with children of various ages and abilities. The program will prepare students for entry level positions in the child care field. The students will organize and lead activities for children of all ages. They will help children develop self help habits, as well as maintain discipline and behavior management. Students will also prepare and serve meals.

INTRODUCTION TO OCCUPATIONAL CHILD CARE - .5 cr
Study of information related to self-concept development theories and their impact on career selection. Explore job opportunities and responsibilities in the early childhood field. Includes historical aspect of early childhood education.

DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN - 1 cr
Examines the cognitive, social, physical, and emotional development of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Theoretical knowledge is intergrated by identifying developmentally appropriate practices, activities and equipment selection.

EARLY CHILDHOOD GUIDANCE & DISCIPLINE - .5 cr
A study of effective guidance methods which support the development of the child including the fostering of self-esteem and age-appropriate communication. Observation and recording techniques are developed.

NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN - .5 cr
The nutritional needs of young children are applied to meal planning, educational activities and compliance with program regulations.

HEALTH AND SAFETY OF CHILDREN - .5 cr
Focuses on childhood illness identification, first aid response, and safe environments for young children.

PLANNING AND PRESENTING CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES I
1 cr

Explores a variety of teaching methods and materials used in early childhood classrooms including story telling, puppetry, music, art, and motor skills. Activity preparation and presentation will be implemented.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION - .5 cr
An introduction to the content and method for developing curriculum for early childhood education programs. Various learning styles and approaches will be presented. 

CHILD CARE PROGRAM MANAGEMENT - .5 cr
The course explores various types of child care service deliveries. Program management skills and employer/employee relations are introduced.

PLANNING & PRESENTING CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES II
1 cr

Continuation of topics and themes begun in ACTIVITIES including food related, health and safety, and self-help skills for young children. Activity presentations will be made in field experience locations. Prerequisite: Planning and Presenting Activities I.

PLANNING AND PRESENTING CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES III
.5 cr

Continuation of topics and themes in Activities I and II, including math, science, language arts, and social studies. Presentations will be made in field experience locations. Prerequisite: Planning and presenting Activities II

CHILD CARE PROFESSIONALISM - 1 cr
Focuses on the qualities of a child care professional with emphasis on interpersonal skills, personal growth ethical behavior as well as the establishment of positive rapport between child's family and child care staff. An approved child care related topic will be researched and presented to incorporate skills and knowledge acquired in the Occupational Child Care field.

CHILDREN'S LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS - 1cr
A study of the basic activity areas of an early childhood classroom, the outdoor play area and the furnishings of these areas. Examines the importance of daily routines and recommended procedures.

GUIDING SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN - .5 cr
A study of the identification of "Developmentally-Delayed" and "At-Risk" children and the methods for integration into the early childhood programs.
