Automotive Technology
Automotive Technicians
repair and service motor vehicles. This course
emphasizes the tools, equipment and techniques that
are important in the automotive industry. Applicants
for this course must have completed ninth grade.
During this three year program, students receive
specialized classroom, shop and on-the-job
experience. They learn to diagnose, maintain and
repair automobiles. They also become familiar with
various tools that are used to service the
automotive engine, power train, chassis and
suspension parts. In addition, students study the
automotive, electrical, fuel, safety and air
management systems.
INTRODUCTION TO AUTO
TECHNOLOGY - 1 cr
This course will cover shop safety, shop management
and how to use service and repair manuals. The
student will learn basic PC skills required by the
Mitchell and All Data Diagnostic Information
Systems. Training in the Identification of
fasteners and specialized repair equipment will be
given along with operation of the axyacetylene torch
set, tire, and battery service.
HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING -
1cr
This course will cover the service of the entire
cooling system as well as replacement of hoses,
belts and flushings, and recycling of anti-freeze.
ENGINE REPAIR - 1 cr
This course will cover
disassembly, measurement, and reassembly of an
internal combustion gasoline engine. This course
will also cover the diagnostics and testing of an
internal combustion engine.
BRAKES - 1 cr
This course will cover
inspection, diagnosis, and the repair of the entire
braking system. Operation of the brake lathe will
be covered along with operation and repair of the
CABS (computerized anti-lock brake system).
STEERING & SUSPENSION - 1 cr
This course will cover
maintenance, inspection, and replacement procedures
for automotive steering and suspension systems.
Instruction of two and four-wheel alignment
procedures are included in this course.
ELECTRICAL - 1 cr
This course will cover
principles of electricity, starting and charging
systems diagnosis, and other basic electrical
competencies.
ENGINE PERFORMANCE - 1 cr
This course will serve as an introduction into
fuel and ignition systems, computerized engine
control systems, and exhaust systems.
HEATING & AIR
CONDITIONING II - .5 cr
This course will cover operation and diagnosis of
today's A/C systems. Both R-12 and R134A systems
will be covered along with the procedures for
recharging and recycling.
ELECTRICAL II - 1 cr
This course, evolving from Electrical I, will cover
in-depth diagnosis and repair of various automotive
electrical and electronic systems.
ENGINE PERFORMANCE II - 1 cr
This course will cover testing and diagnosis of
computerized engine control systems and emission
control systems.
ELECTIVES
PA STATE INSPECTION
CERTIFICATION - .5cr
The student completing and passing this course
earns his/her PA Inspection License enabling him/her
to perform motor vehicle inspections.
MANUAL TRANS/AXLES - .5 cr
This course will cover the design and operation of
manual transmissions and transaxles. Also,
diagnosis and repair of clutches, drive axles,
differential assemblies will be addressed.
AUTOMATIC TRAN/AXLE - .5 cr
This course will cover
power flow and operation of an automatic
transmission/transaxle. Also addressed will be auto
trans service procedures and adjustments.
CO-OP - 1-3 cr
A method of learning where the student works in
his/her field of study and is paid and graded by
that employer.
TECH-PREP WORK-BASED LEARNING - .5 cr
A method of training where the student works in
industry for up to three (3) weeks without pay. The
student learner works closely with the employer on
tasks that were previously studied at school.
